Choosing your wedding party can be one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning… and also one of the hardest. There can be a lot of pressure to make the “right” choices, especially when you have a long list of people you love. Sisters, brothers, best friends, cousins, childhood friends, college roommates… suddenly your bridal party is 20 people deep and you’re wondering how you got there.
But here’s the thing: your wedding party doesn’t have to fit a certain mold.
You don’t have to choose someone because they chose you. You don’t have to have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. And you certainly don’t have to include someone simply because you feel like you should.
Instead, think about the people who have genuinely played a meaningful role in your personal life and your love story with your fiance.

Choose the People Who Have Shaped Your Story
When you’re trying to decide who should stand beside you on your wedding day, start by thinking beyond just who your closest friends are right now.
Ask yourself: Who has been influential in my relationship with my fiancé? Who has shaped me throughout my life? Who has encouraged me, challenged me, prayed for me, and pointed me toward Christ?
Think about the people who have been there through different seasons of your life. The friends who have seen you at your best and your worst. The family members who have always supported you. The people who have encouraged your relationship and genuinely love you both.
For Christian couples especially, I think it’s so special to consider the people who have played a role in your faith journey. Maybe it’s a friend who has prayed with you through difficult seasons, a mentor who has poured into you spiritually, or someone who has consistently encouraged you and your relationship with the Lord.
And remember, there is no age limit.
Your wedding party doesn’t have to consist solely of people your age. Your sister, mom, aunt, grandmother, mentor, or someone else who has played an incredibly important role in your life can absolutely be part of your wedding party if that’s what feels right for you.
Your wedding is about celebrating your marriage, so your wedding party should reflect the people who have helped shape the people you’re becoming.

Including More of the People You Love
If you have more people you love than you have room for in your bridal party, there are plenty of other ways to give them a meaningful place on your wedding day.
Ushers are a great option for friends of the groom. They can welcome guests to the ceremony, help them find their seats, hand out programs, and make sure everything runs smoothly before the ceremony begins. But beyond the practical responsibilities, it’s also a way to honor someone who has played an important role in your life.
Personal attendants are another wonderful option for the bride, especially for those friends or family members who you want in your corner throughout the day. They can help with little wedding-day needs, keep you hydrated and fed, help communicate with family or vendors, or simply be the person you can turn to when you need something.
Maybe it’s a childhood best friend who you couldn’t imagine your wedding day without, but you don’t necessarily see them as a bridesmaid. Maybe it’s a cousin, sibling, mentor, or family friend who has played a huge role in your life. And it doesn’t have to be just one person! I have seen weddings that have multiple personal attendants.
They don’t have to stand at the altar to be an important part of your wedding.
Your wedding party doesn’t have to be the only people who get a special place in your day. Find meaningful ways to include the people you love, and don’t be afraid to create roles that fit your relationships rather than simply following tradition.
Choose the People You Can’t Imagine Getting Married Without
At the end of the day, don’t overthink it.
Think about the people who make you feel like yourself. The people who make you laugh when you’re stressed. The people who will pray for you when marriage gets hard. The people who genuinely love your fiancé. The people who will celebrate your marriage, not just your wedding.
Choose the people you can’t imagine getting married without.
Because years from now, when you’re looking through your wedding photos, you’ll want to see the people who weren’t just standing beside you on your wedding day.
You’ll want to see the people who were part of your story.
